Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, alongside a group of prominent Pakistani-American doctors, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hassan Suleman Memorial Hospital (HSMH) in Malir. The event, held in Ibrahim Hyderi, marked the beginning of construction on a state-of-the-art hospital designed to transform healthcare access in one of Karachi’s most underserved areas.
The ceremony was attended by key provincial ministers, including Sharjeel Memon, Sardar Shah, Jam Khan Shoro, Shahid Thahim, and Riaz Shah Shirazi, as well as Advisor Najmi Alam. Esteemed doctors and philanthropists such as Amjad Siraj Memon, Executive Director of JPMC Prof. Shahid Rasool, Prof. Tariq Mahmood, and Mushtaq Chapra of the Patient Aid Foundation were also present, underscoring the collaborative and philanthropic nature of the project.
Chief Minister Shah praised the initiative as a shining example of philanthropy and international collaboration. He commended the dedication of Pakistani-American doctors and pledged a one-to-one matching grant for all donations received for the hospital. Calling the HSMH a “beacon of hope,” he reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting the hospital’s development through financial, infrastructural, and operational assistance.
Dr. Javed Suleman, Chairman of the Hassan Suleman Foundation, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Sindh government and specifically acknowledged the vision of former President Asif Ali Zardari. He highlighted the government’s contributions, including land allocation and financial support, as critical to the hospital’s mission of providing free, high-quality medical services to those in need.
Dr. Iqbal Zafar, President of HSMH, spoke of the unity of purpose between Pakistani Americans and their homeland that has brought this project to life. He described the hospital as a “lifeline” for the Malir community, aiming to address critical healthcare gaps in the region.
Prof. S.M. Tariq Rafi, Chairperson of the project, echoed sentiments of gratitude and hope. He emphasized that the hospital would serve as a sanctuary for underserved populations, offering brighter futures through accessible healthcare.
The Hassan Suleman Memorial Hospital, a 312-bed facility, is set to be completed by 2026 and will provide a wide range of services free of charge. These include emergency care, cardiac surgeries, specialized treatments in cardiology, pediatrics, women’s health, and trauma care.
In a symbolic gesture of commitment, Dr. Javed Suleman announced his intention to personally perform the hospital’s first coronary angioplasty upon its opening. The project stands as a powerful example of public-private partnership and cross-border collaboration, showcasing the potential of collective efforts in transforming healthcare access for the people of Sindh.
