1,082 degrees conferred to medical graduates at 58th CPSP Convocation

A total of 1,082 medical graduates of various disciplines were conferred degrees at the 58th convocation of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). The Convocation Ceremony was held recently at its Campus which was graced by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah and Prof. Mohammod Shahidullah, President of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) as the Guest of Honor. The ceremony was also attended by faculty members, and graduating specialists and their family members.

Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah addressing the ceremony urged the new graduates to serve with empathy and dedication, reminding them of the sacrifices made by their families and the nation to support their journey to this prestigious profession. He highlighted vital role of quality institutions in national development, acknowledging CPSP as one of the premier institutions of postgraduate medical education in Pakistan and abroad. He emphasized the importance of academic and administrative autonomy for institutions to thrive and added that social responsibility should be at the core of medical institutions. He expressed confidence in the institution’s continued progress and success. He congratulated the newly qualified specialists, and emphasized their crucial role in alleviating the sufferings of the people and continuing the legacy of dedication and excellence in healthcare.

Prof. Andrew Elder, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh praised the CPSP vital role in training a wide range of medical professionals, including surgeons, physicians, transplant specialists, and many others. He appreciated the increasing number of female graduates in the medical profession. He underlined the importance of gender diversity in healthcare. He delivered an inspiring message, reminding specialists of the fundamental human strength in serving humanity.

He added that “Despite all the fabulous technology that we have robotic surgeons, artificial intelligence never ever forget the power of your own eyes to see, the power of your ears to listen, the power of your hands to touch and heal and the power of your voices to comfort and to explain is irreplaceable. No matter how advanced technology becomes, the true power of medicine will always lie in human connection.  

Prof. Dr. Mohammod Shahidullah, President of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) emphasized that collaboration between CPSP and BCPS is a pivotal strategy for strengthening postgraduate medical education. He also acknowledged the seminar’s role in fostering a deeper understanding and collaboration between the two colleges, aiming to elevate the standards of medical education and training in both countries. Addressing the newly conferred fellows and members, he emphasized the significance of patient care and professional responsibilities.

He urged the graduates to foster a sense of camaraderie among their colleagues and peers, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in the medical profession. He also stressed the need for continuous research, advising young specialists to focus on studies relevant to Pakistan’s population and healthcare challenges.

Prof. Muhammad Shoaib Shafi, President CPSP in address highlighted CPSP’s progress and role in country’s medical education and training. CPSP has significantly contributed to advancing undergraduate medical education in Pakistan, laying the foundation for innovations in the medical field. Furthermore, the CPSP training network has expanded its outreach within Pakistan and internationally, ensuring that its graduates have access to institutions equipped with modern facilities for advanced medical training, whether within Pakistan or abroad.  He congratulated the recipients of fellowships and memberships on reaching this great milestone in their careers and also to the families of the graduating doctors who have made great sacrifices to take their loved ones to this milestone. He emphasized the urgent need to develop specialized fields such as Emergency Medicine and Critical Care, which is essential for addressing the rising demand for life-saving skills in trauma care.

Earlier, Dr. Rafia Haleem Sheikh received the Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry medal for securing the highest marks in FCPS-II (Surgery), Dr. Maryam received the Prof. Azhar Faruqui Medal in the field of Adult Cardiology and Dr. Muhammad Osama received the Prof. Naqib Ullah Achakzai Medal for securing the highest marks in FCPS-II (Neurosurgery).
